Thumb of Michigan
Had radish roots in tile mains this spring. I have trouble with that on loamier/sandier soils occasionally. Usually not real bad, taking the rat guard off and pulling them out will fix the problem most of the time. Did have to dig a main up once- I used a Rawson zone builder after wheat harvest, planted radish late August behind the ripper. They were in pretty tight that time. We usually check the mains right after the spring thaw for obstructions.

As far as slugs- never had slugs eat roots. You sure its slug damage? Had them raise a lot of heck with the leaves in the past, never the roots.
