Subject: Re: dryer vs full floor aeration

East Central Iowa
I assume you have a bin with a full aeration floor? Your question is then what is the benefit of having just an aeration fan for this set-up; or having a fan-burner (aka dryer fan) in the bin? If this is your question, it depends as Fred says on what you are storing and where you are at. Assuming somewhere in the mid-west.....for soybeans aeration should be sufficient. For corn if you are only using a fan for aeration and storing the wet corn in the bin, you need to make sure the corn is not too wet (not over 18 points or so), and you can take the time to slowly dry it down to a more manageable, storable 15 points, give or take.

The benefits, with corn, of having a drying system is that (a) you can be pretty confident of getting the corn to a moisture content where it is able to be stored without much risk of going out of condition; and (b) you can get it there much quicker and in any type of weather conditions (and re-use the bin to dry the next batch of grain). The con's are that a dryer fan/burner costs more than just a simple aeration fan, you need a bigger fan to dry with (than to aerate with), and you have the cost of gas and electricity to run the dryer.

Now, if you are talking about something else then we would need more details to answer your question. Hope this helps!!
