We drag the trap far away out in an open place , open the trap and shoot them on the run with my long tom pistol, more sporting and fun that way.
I believe your grandpa got that right about the 12 ga. A couple times I have used the 12ga instead of the pistol, when the parts stop flying off the skunk, they lay real still.
