| Went on a barn tour, looking at old barns in SW IA. Started at I35/I80, went west on I80 and south on US 71 (2/3 way going west in IA), went south till about 40 miles from MO. Made a circle from US Hwy 71 & 34, west to about NE, south to about MO., east to 30 miles from I35, back to US Hwy 34 & 71.
Saw VERY FEW corn fields that would be close to high good to excellent. A lot of wet, sour, yellow spots. Not huge areas, but very significant to cut yields. Have read of problems in IL and IN. I am lucky to have what appears to be a good crop. There are fields around here that show compaction problems. If it turns dry, they will show up fast.
Cutting to the chase--find it hard to believe to have an above avereage yield. I've seen other places lose N and I know that I have lost N. In 2008, that lost N showed up in the end. We don't have enough ducks leaning in the same direction for a really good yield. I may be proven wrong, but my observation. | |
