S.E. Iowa | used to be hundreds of mushroom growing facilities in the Chicago land area until urban sprall and higher fuel prices for winter heating did away with them. Composted Horse manure has been the traditional growing medium. I believe Pennsylvania is still the largest growing state might be wrong there. Growing them is realativly easy on small scale and much more difficult comercially. Lots of east european imigrants and farmers bought kits in the 40-50s and grew them in their houses under there beds where it was warm and dark. Comercially the problem is finding and acessing markets to dispose of your crop. Pretty easy to sell 5-!0 pounds of mushrooms at a farmers market and yet another thing to get rid of 500lbs a day. | |
