I don't know that there is a correct way, just wrong ways. Adequate venting is essential. Whether that is roof vents or lids or doors open doesn't matter. Screened vents can freeze and not let air out. Plenty roofs mushroomed over the winter here. Open lids can let rain in, not good either. Just so the bin has plenty venting.
