| You have a bad neutral somewhere between the main service and the shop. When that happens the line voltage will increase and decrease depending on the load of each of the 120 volt legs.
When you plugged in the tractor, the load caused the voltage to drop, this the light went out. Your yard light is most likely on the other leg of the 120 volt system, so the voltage raised enough to light the yard light.
Pretty easy to find with a roll of light wire and a voltmeter.
Attach one end of the wire roll to the neutral at the main service, and the other end to one of the voltmeter leads. Touch the other voltmeter lead to the neutral bar in the shop panel.
Turn on a 120 volt load -about 10 amps .
The voltmeter should not read more than 2 volts unless your shop is a long way away from the service. | |
