Granddaddy had an IH 1210 (3/4 ton) that he bought used. That thing was a tank, but it didn't ride worth a dang. It came from the factory with i think a 305 engine. It got used pretty hard during peanut harvest pulling wagons out of the field, about twenty miles to the home shop where we dried them. Eventually one of the temp hired hands ran it out of oil and a local mechanic couldn't find another of those engines, but he found a used 345. That thing had a lot of torque. You could ease out on the clutch in fourth gear and not stall it if you were careful. The wagons we had back then were two wheeled Benthals with big airplane tires and had a lot of tongue weight, but that truck would barely settle when you let the jack down.
My daddy bought a brand new 1972 Chevy with overload springs and was bragging about how good it was going to handle the wagons. The first time we took it to the field he started letting the jack down and it just kept going down until the jack bottomed out. Had to get a high lift jack to get the trailer jack off. When he finally got all the weight on the truck, the tires were wayyyy up in the fenders and the front end was up in the air like some of the kids like it now days. He was mad, and granddaddy was laughing which made daddy even madder. He ended up taking it back to the dealership and getting them to add some more springs to it.
