Subject: RE: Surge protector wiring

central mich
If it is out side I would Keep it out of panel board. On 480 , 3 phase they about destroy the panel board with smoke and soot when lightning hits.. On pivots we mount them out side.

Yours is a NEMA 4X so it is made for outside or wet environs..

Many many years I have seen lightning arresters on 60 and 90 TV antenna. The two antenna wires each had a heavy conductor pin at 90 degrees from the tower and the antenna wire. The two heavy wires pins were spaced about 6 inch apart. And in the middle of the two horizontal heavy conductors was another heavy verticle pin that went straight down to earth ground. The tower was right out side of the homes window. I saw more than once during a lightning storm the lightning would hit the tower come down the wires and cross to the air gap in a flash and go to ground. You could see and hear it inside the house.
The modern units have a MOV with an air gap and the MOV is supposed to bleed off the surge. The ones I have seen on pivots the unit is blown apart by the strike but panel and well motor survived.
