| It's an old beast. It always runs, never misses a beat. NOTHING sounds like a Detroit!
I've dug about 6' with ours, and pretty sure it will dig deeper, not sure of cave ins, that is well above the height of the boot.
The FIRST thing I got working was the emergency shut off for the supercharger, I have heard stories of Detroits running away.
It's old an worn out.
The drive chains and sprockets are shot, the right drive sprocket used to come off it's shaft until we welded the bolt that holds it on in place.
It tracks crooked, but it can dig "reasonably" straight despite the worn out tracks.
We replaced the dig chain and sprockets, bearings and rebuilt the drive sprocket mount after it jammed on me digging once.
It was NOT well cared for, but we've kept it running well without a lot of expensive repairs.
Zero engine issues other than some fuel delivery issues but fixed it with an electric lift pump and a sprayer inline strainer before the pump.
Several filters we have been able to change to spin on filters.
We got rid of the expensive 4DT battery and put a group 31 on and it works great along with a battery cut off switch.
We rebuilt some of the pivots that were worn out that switch between dig and transport to make it shift easier.
The transmission leaks but always works.
We replaced this year the small drive pulley on the transmission and it made a difference digging, the belts slip MUCH less.
It digs well, holds grade VERY well IMO for a 50 year old machine, it will hold at .5% grade, that's about 6" in 100'.
It's my baby and I love it.
