scmn | It just seems very unjust in a world when some less fortunate might buy a truck for say 1500$ a month, maybe he can make payments ok,then when his buyis 3/4 paid for it drops a trans for 10grand.That working dude cannot spit out the 10 grand. His bank wont loan it on a 4 year old truck.
How about a little math. 3/4 paid for on a 4 year old truck would almost require a 60m loan. Now 1500/m for 60m is 90,000 in payments which at 8% interest would have been a 73,977.65 purchase price. The loan balance remaining after payment 47 is 18,619.54 or 25.2% loan remaining. Now add 10,000 to it and it comes to 28,619. Finance that for 24 months at 23% interest and the payment remains 1500/m, extends the loan 11m, and covers the repair. The only way a bank will not finance that is if you put a lot of miles on the point the vehicle value is less than 29k or you have terrible credit (not sure how you got 8%/60M then.)
With an original loan of 73k there is almost no way for it to be Pro/SLE/SLT trims so that is why I selected AT4/Denali. A quick search online yields several MY21/MY22 GMC Seirra AT4/Denalis with 110-140,000 miles on them in that price range. With a 140k in 4/5y is a lot of driving per year but within realm. Being upset about a $10,000 repair on a 140,000 mi vehicle that had a transmission go out seems a little rough on the OEM. Run the same numbers with an HD that retains value better and it puts more holes in your argument. The main question I would be asking is: why someone with a 2021 vehicle was paying 8% interest on a 60m vehicle loan when GM offered 3.3% for 60m at that time? With a $1500/m payment it should have been paid off by month 48.
