In my experience changing oil, I can tell you about the same as a lab just by visual inspection and smell on gearbox oils. I've probably taken several hundred thousand oil samples in the past 27 years. If the used oil is the same color as your new oil, smells the same, doesn't look like metallic paint, and very little sticks to a magnet, it's all good. Darker in color or a strong smell comes from heat. Gold or bronze coloring comes from brass thrust washers or bearings. Silver color comes from gears or bearings. Brown color comes from silicon which will also exponentially increase the gold and silver colors.
