Nearly every penny my family had when I was a kid went into trying to keep the bank from taking the farm. All our wore out vehicles had well over 100k miles and wasn't unusual to have one with 200k+. The engines were tired but still got down the road just fine. The TH400 transmissions (dad was a big block guy) on the other hand, often succumbed to their weak points at the hands of my teenage right foot.
Do they make a real reliable pickup anymore?
