Yes, dashcam video makes the story.

Second, if a Volvo crashed because of a thunderstorm and burst into flames killing the whole family inside, it would be newsworthy because some of us assumed the volvo should be safer than that. I assumed more expensive plane equaled safer plane. Which of course is true, but not ultimately decisive in this case.

.

A 30 year old Learjet isn’t really a “more expensive plane” anymore. They’re $3 million or so, whereas a 10 year old gulfstream might be 15x that much.

There are exactly two reasons this crash is getting attention: dramatic audio, and even more dramatic video of the crash. Both are short, so they fit in everyone’s tictocs, and a pretty young face behind the audio is just icing on the cake for the clickbaiters.

If the audio ended with some dude telling ATC “we have a problem here” and then went down in a swamp where there’s no smoking hole and definitely no video, this crash would be less famous than Brittney Infanger’s.

Yeah, I suppose Volvo's are getting older and not so remarkably safe also. I was mostly thinking of this in comparison to a recent icing crash in WI that killed a family, that I assumed was a smaller piston engine plane, and I assumed was not as prepared for icing conditions.

I don't ever remember this much coverage of the value airliner that nosedived into the everglades decades back, no footage, no story, just some debris floating around a hole in the swamp. Of course no internet then, and no perky pilot on tiktok.
