SE Iowa | I planted 6 hybrids this year and this is how I’d rate them. Keep in mind it was an odd year and a little down on yields in general over last three years.
Best:
DK112-22 - Was just a solid plant and ear. Consistent. Amazing on fill as kernels were huge even when kernel counts weren’t crazy. Planted later so emerged in warmer weather.
P10300 - Very large kernel counts. Good potential and tasseled very early but had good stay green. I thought emergence was decent in a tough environment as it was cold and wet early.
Good:
P13777 - Probably without a doubt the most yield potential of anything I planted. Was first planted and emergence/crusting was an issue. Gave me some inconsistent ears. What came up good and on time was excellent. Good plant health as well. It did wrap but pollination was decent. Another draw back was short husks. It had more sprouted corn in the ear than anything else from 14” of rain in September but even so I’ll likely plant more.
B13C49 - Pretty good corn. It was one that I didn’t fungicide so idk if I left some on the table here. Stood great still at harvest. Yields decent. Fairly consistent. Wouldn’t be afraid to plant it again. Not sure if it’s potential matches the three above or not but a steady Eddie.
P1027 - Solid but didn’t blow me away. Side by side the 10300 split planter was certainly better this year.
Ok:
P17623 - Good potential. Good emergence. Absolute raccoon bait. Deer love it too. Might as well call this candy corn. I did not spray this and it got riddled with tar AND southern toward the end. If I could avoid wildlife and would have sprayed it with fungicide I saw lots of positives. Shortest plant in my line up even though this is a 117 day corn. Longer ears, shorter plant, and the ripped down made for some incredibly low ear heights for harvest. Not only are these ears practically eye levels for coon and deer they weren’t fun to harvest either.
Hope this helps anyone and everyone. Please share your thoughts.
