Saginaw Bay Area - Michigan | Had a variety this year that put all the effort into growing, but not much into kernels. Where there was better moisture, corn was 13-14' tall. Yield was 40 bushel short in both fields we had this variety, adjacent fields were regular yield, reasonably certain it was the variety. We don't do silage, but seems like this variety, while not marketed for it, trended more that way.
Obviously, don't use that variety again, but are there are things that we could have done early/mid season to foresee and then improve the outcome? Can't say it was particularly tall in June, for example... Are there trait characteristics you find are best to avoid?
No disease/pest visible, fert and chem program same as previous and nearby fields.
Just doing post harvest review... Like the one year had a field that tile was not keeping up with and if only I had ran out there and cut a couple surface drains, probably would have saved a good 10 acres of beans but at the time felt that it wasn't enough water that would be there long enough to be a concern.
