| If you leave a tall enough stubble, straight 2 inch points will leave a fair amount standing plus whatever gets knocked down. We run 2 inch points on both our 680 and 1610 chisels so we can leave as much on top as possible. Plus they leave a rough but smooth finish behind them compared to beaver tails or twisted spikes. As long as you don't have big cattails, the 2 inch spikes will handle the trash just fine.
As far as working whole fields, we try to do our more problem prone fields every year. Otherwise if we miss a year, itll take a couple years to clean up those low spots. Longer if we have a string of wet years in a row. The fields that naturally drain well, we can get by for 2-3 years without a pass with the chisel plow, but then it usually needs a pass after that 2nd or 3rd year. But that's typically only if there's not a lot of residue that will plug up the cultivator in the spring if we spread fert for wheat, corn, or canola. Otherwise then we have to do fall tillage of some sort because we dont have a VT tool or disk with proper seedbed leveling, and we still use a press drill for small grains and canola
