Subject: Chisel plow and working fields in minimum till system

I wanted to get some thoughts from everyone on this forum on field management. We grow small grains in west central ND. Typically we try leave as much stubble (Wheat, Canola, etc.) standing as possible and disc our edges and low spots in the fall. We have to work our low spots in some fashion so we can get them to dry out in the spring and be able to be seeded. If we leave everything stubble we will typically not be able to get in to our low spots. I don't like the amount of tillage our disc does in these low spots and would prefer to leave more stubble standing and try to have a better balance of everything. It would also be nice to have a smoother finish so that on dry years we would not have to hit the disced areas in the spring to smooth them out. Sometimes depending on conditions we heavy harrow (drag) or super coulter fields in the spring. We use an 1830 hoe drill and have had good luck seeding directly into standing stubble and worked areas.

Two questions: A) what are some other tools being used to work low spots? and B) should we be chiseling whole fields periodically? Like say once every 5 years. Would we see a benefit from loosening the field?

Feel free to contribute any other thoughts. I do realize every year is different and so it touch to answer these questions but just looking for some thoughts. Thanks for everything.
