southern MN | A brush hog would mow it down if you are able to safely drive on the ground. And in the future keep it rough trimmed. Probably a 6 foot would be the best dollars vs size for you, foot more or less? I guess half acre, smaller would be more manuver able and not take long. Most things will end up regrowing; if you mow monthly often the nicer grass plants eventually take over the uglier broadleaves but it’s a long journey.
Some herbicides would kill most all of it, if you wanted to start over with fresh dirt and re seed.
Some herbicides would kill only the weedy broadleaf weeds, while leaving the grassy plants to grow and fill in with more grass over time.
In any case mowing the mess down and letting it regrow a week or two would make spraying much more worthwhile/ easy/ possible. It’s difficult to spray tall mature stuff.
Burning the mess off is a good suggestion and would be a good non herbicide way to go, but with a water tower that close I’m guessing that would be frowned on by officials and might be difficult to do safely depending what is around your half acre.
Plow is a primary tillage tool and would turn over all the mess and burry it, but leave the ground very rough. It will be tough to get that much growth through a plow for a 45 hp tractor, so burning or heavily shredding the growth will be needed first.
A disk is secondary tillage and would smooth down the lumps the plow leaves, but would struggle to cut up those big weeds by itself. They make huge cutting disks; but not for the size tractor you have or for your budget. Some can get by with just a small disk, if you have time and not clay soils. But it’s a challenge.
Then a harrow or drag of some type smooths out the ground from the small ridges the dusk leaves.
That’s a lot of equipment for half an acre….
