southern MN | When the virus hit, I realized we might not be gathering much for some time.
So I joined an online war game.
It’s called a war game, but you are collecting resources to build up your self so you can grow and build up more. It’s better to group up into an alliance of people so you can all grow better.
Your alliances are in a world, every other weekend the alliances fight each other, or fight together against a different world.
I’m such an independent person I played alone for quite a few months.
I ended up the leader of a very small band of also independent type folk. Led that group for 4 years. Was told early on I was stupid to play that way, 4 years in I have some great friends from Canada, Japan, Brazil, Hawaii, several countries in Europe, 2 in Africa until their real world politics ended internet for them. There was a very urban black gal from New York City that we had a great time comparing photos of our day, and daily agendas.
I am a shy person in real life; leading a group of people, defending them from the other groups in the fake world, recruiting more team mates, was a very big change from my normal life. I think I grew a lot.
We merged our group with another group, and I became just a cog in the machine. That was a learning curve, to go back to following the new leadership, and blending our teams together from a back seat position.
The game itself so much reflects real life, real politics. The aggressive people put up with anything to be top dog alliances and do anything to the smaller groups. It’s all justified. The smaller groups complain a lot but little is done. Really can see how current conflicts and trade police’s come to be, from watching the same exact situations develop in the fake game. The parallels can be startling. Human nature.
What’s funny is after several years, I came to find out my group was ag oriented. Japan worked at a greenhouse. Kentucky runs cattle. West Coast does landscaping. Ohio helped his grandpa farm. 2 in Europe have ties to growing food. Also the average age of the group appears to be 50ish.
So, for 6 years perhaps I’m a loser. (To be honest it is probably much longer.)
But I have some great friends I’ve never met around the globe.
I think I have learned a lot about leadership and working with groups.
Whatever my beliefs on the world and politics and trade were, I think a lot of ‘stuff’ was added into my view of all that.
So, I’m a loser. That’s ok.
Jeez, how much did I write here? Sorry I think that is more of a loser than game play….
