95 miles NW of Quitaque, TX | I do a trip on US 287 SE of Amarillo every once in a while. I drive 70 mph most of the way with the cruise on. Going SE you are losing altitude. The altitude lost if about 1500 feet in the 57 mile drive. The problem is that I tend to have a head wind of sometimes 30-40 mph. Coming home I am going uphill but the wind tends to be less. I actually pass a lot of trucks on the trip. Cars very little. I found that by not going the legal speed limit of 75, I enjoy the trip better. Most cars and PUs are are are going 5-10 over that number. Some a lot more than that. I found that by going 70 instead of 75 saves me gas mileage. I do not really seem to get where I am going faster at 75. Besides I am retired and enjoy watching the seasons and the farmer's crops along the way. So by going slower I save a little money in gas and get to enjoy the view. The nice thing is that there are cotton, sorghum (both hegari and grain), corn, wheat and peanuts depending on the season. There is both irrigation and dryland. |
