SW MO | I’m the 3rd generation on this farm and the 3rd generation to work out of the same old farm garage. My grandpa was real good at shop work and repairing equipment and my dad was always his right hand man when working on stuff. Grandpa grew up during the depression and was from a family like a lot of others who the depression was hard on. He never complained about it, he just said everyone they knew was in the same boat they were in. I think the hard times of the depression left an impression on him that he passed down to dad and then dad passed to me. This garage has been added onto 3 times as equipment grew but everything just stayed in its place in the garage. Waiting on beans to ripen and some small rains have made me decide it’s time for a cleanup. It’s a hard thing mentally to go through things that you know was put in certain places for a reason. I’ve been in this garage since I was in diapers and have found stuff I’ve never seen before even though I knew this old building inside and out. They kept everything and I’ve added to the pile over the years. I think dad kept every farm magazine and calendar he ever got!! Everything had its place but there was no rime nor reason to why it was setting where it was. As far as I know they never bought any new shelving but instead would go to hardware store closeouts and implement dealer sales and buy shelving, hardware and old parts. I’ve found the tiniest of nails bolts and screws tucked away in brittle old medicine bottles; vegetable cans, and who knows how many Pringle’s cans with stuff in them. It makes me feel guilty sorting through the unusable stuff. I found a old coffee can with the pieces of chains you cut when a chain is cut from a new roll. I think of the bolt bins we have now compared to the cans they used for years and years. I know if dad and grandpa were still here they’d say it was time to clean it out but that doesn’t make it any easier. A lot of things I’ve found have made me smile though. I found my grandpas toolbox that he put together when he was 15 years old. I’ll never use anything in it but it’s priceless to me. The garage calendar which is still in pretty good shape has hung on the wall for 56 years and as long as I’m around it’ll hang right where it is. It has been nice to get rid of the dust on the ledges and shelves though!! I’ve got a couple of young daughters who like coming out here and grab some boards and nails and make their creations!! I hope to take time to work with them on a old lawn mower they saved out of the garbage this summer.
