McCanna, ND | Made oatlage for the first time ever the start of the week. Quizzed the few people I know that have silage experience, literally everyone said swath it then chop it asap.
The oats were just at/after flower and start of milk stage.
So that is exactly what I did. Then I did more research (after I chopped of course) and found out anything over 75% moisture is not ideal.
I did a microwave moisture test and came up with a strong 70% moisture content. Today I see there is water standing next to the pile, pile is built on a sand ridge.
what did I do right/wrong? I’m thinking I should have waited 12-24hrs before chopping after putting them in a swath, temps where 30-50 for and overcast, little to no drying happened.
Is the water coming out of the oatlage pile going to cause issues or indicate issues ahead?
