While I'm willing to blame government for a multitude of things, I can't blame them for the engineering nightmares.   Things such as removing an entire light assembly and a fender when a headlight goes bad, something that used to require a $2 bulb and a screw driver to fix.  Now the part alone is over $200 and labor another $200 on one car.  Some are more.

Or putting a starter in an engine under the manifold.  It's so easy to build something on a computer CAD program while some mechanic has to tear half a machine apart to fix a 50¢ part.
