Subject: RE: you have other businesses

Western Oregon
I grew up wanting to farm. Mom and dad sold the farm in 1980. I was farming on my own and the farm didn't really fit. Never second guessed my decision not to buy. It was not worth what they got for it. Had to retire because of health at 37. Sold all but my first farm and rented it out. Got town job after my health improved, 16 years there. Retired at 55 because of health issues. Went off to see the western US in a small motorhome. Son came along and wanted to farm, just handed him the original farm and he carried on. Wife and my health got to where the motorhome was too much so settled down in a small cabin. Gave family home in town to daughter at that time, too much for us.

You say you have another 50. Do as you said. IF grandson wants it later, there is his start and if he wants to bad enough,he can go from there. Enjoy what you want to do (if wife will agree to it) Sound like you will still have enough to do. Only you can make you happy. The world will go on anyway. We kept our little place and gave the kids the rest while they could use it to enjoy while we could enjoy what they wanted to do. Not what we planned for it after we were gone. We don't "owe" anyone anything. My parents were first generation on that farm, I grew up there for the first 12 years and left on my own, I didn't want to subsistance farm. Dad never made a dime more than a living, the land just appreciated. They lived a good life after selling, downsizing and enjoying their lives in town. Mom worked hard off the farm for us to live poor....James
