Subject: RE: Ceres Air C150 vs DJI T100

By obstacle navigation, I'm referring to how the drone will fly around (or over) an obstacle that the radar/lidar picks up.

DJI in general is pretty smooth and quick when it detects an unmarked obstacle that it needs to avoid. However, there was an issue (maybe still is?) where the T100 was flying up into power lines on its own. When on the flat land mode, DJI prioritizes flying around (horizontally) obstacles. And in the hill/orchard mode, they fly over obstacles. For example, it'll fly around a tree in flat mode, and jump over it in hill mode.

With the Ceres it's really good at "detecting" obstacles, but it's a bit slow and clunky when trying to "navigate" those obstacles. It really hates flying under power lines so it tends to get stuck unless you disable the obstacle avoidance. Boundary passes near treelines are annoying because it picks up the branches and eats through battery life trying to fly around them if you don't leave yourself a big enough buffer.

I'd like to stress that any radar/lidar and sensing system on ANY spray drone should only be used as a backup. Don't 100% trust that it'll pick up obstacles perfectly. Best practice is to mark obstacles ahead of time. Dead trees in particular tend to eat radar and lidar.
