Nebraska | Cancer eye is a Hereford problem. Pinkeye is not a Hereford problem. Anytime I hear someone say Hereford get more pinkeye, I figure they aren’t that observant and confused the two. I treat far more black cattle for it than Hereford cattle. And it’s not even close. If it was the white face, Charolais would have a higher incidence as well, but nobody is talking about it in Charolais.
I do agree there’s a genetic component. But it’s genetic correlations have little to do with color and more to do with immune systems and eye set. Poor eye set allowing more irritants into the eye can be found in individuals of several breeds. | |
