Usually I recommend a New Holland 560 Specialty Crop for stalks. Best bales you will get out of a 5x6 baler and reliable performance.

But if you are going to make windrows with a stalk shredder I think you might be better off with a Vermeer that has the power windguard. Shredded stalks dumped straight in a windrow feed hard.

If you have green stalks you would be better off with a plain stalk shredder and come back later with a rake to make the windrow.

I wouldn't use twine ever.

Don't get a non Specialty Crop if you go New Holland. You will need the pickup that only the SC has. The Specialty Crop Plus has a troublesome sledge follower roll arrangement that should be changed if you find a deal on one.

How large of wheel rake? ~4 ton dm of stalks per acre

4 ton DM translates to about 8 bales an acre which is a lot. At that level I think I would stay at about 25' in a row which is 10 30" rows. Wheel rakes work best in stalks if they are not run at full width. On 30 " rows take the number of rake wheels and divide it by 2 and add 2 and that is where the happy spot of row coverage will be for that rake. 16 wheel rake for example 16/2=8. 8+2=10. 16 wheel rake (although it will open to 12 rows) will be happiest at 10 rows. If you do nothing to the stalks prior to raking it is hard to make a wheel rake work well unless it is being run well under that formula and the rake has rubber mounted tines.
