Milford, IL | Security and remote desktop setup are incompatible for anything but the savviest of computer touchers, IMO.
If I needed what you described, would probably set up a separate home PC behind a firewall to act as the server. That PC would be devoid of any mission critical information. Server PC would be on Linux so Micro$oft can't wreck my setup with a forced update. I'd have to spend a fair bit of time on the software decision, which I have not done, because I don't have a need for remote desktop software. Then consult a real networking pro to sort the holes in my plan, and I still probably would not sleep well with the server powered on.
In short, Remote Desktop software is a significant secruity risk - and companies that run this type of software often have teams of people dedicated to plugging the holes that users and bad actors create. Proceed with caution would be appropriate I think.
Finally - I re-read your original question. IF, for example, you are wanting to access your desktop PC in the basement from your tablet on the night stand or laptop in the garage - or any other use/case within your home private network - this is not a real security risk at all. | |
