| So, I think you have hit on a lot of correct statements about pink eye or eye irritation in general. However, in this day and age it makes me shake my head at producers that want to treat like gramps did 50 years ago. I remember the only drug I ever knew was combiotic penicillin. It was the cure drug for everything as well a diesel fuel for foot rot. I remember as a kid buying a 55-gallon drum of to mix in foot baths to run sheep in for foot rot. You never wanted to get it on your skin or eyes.
I think a lot of posters hit on it with nutrition and mineral supplement. That is your first line of defense in anything you do with animal and human. Foot rot comes about because you have a compromise in hoof wall and the bacteria gets in their system. Basically, same with pink eye. You get eye irritation from high grazing residue or bale feeders with hay falling down and giving eye irritation. Also, your interduce bacteria from flies passing it from herd to herd.
So, any practice you can do to eliminate things like this will help. Grazing in the dry arid west I don't have a fly parasite load like you guys do in a high precipitation area. I also never have to worry about grazing high residue forage. A great older vet I highly respect always told me the phrase "the solution to pollution is dilution." that pretty well sums up life in general.
So, a person needs to remember a person quoting a treatment on this site will be different for most people reading it on here. Remember the phase; location, location makes all the difference from selling real state to treatment of disease or afflictions. A cattle feeder in confined housing or open feed lots is going to treat differently than a producer in the open arid west. Also, if you need to be 100% drug free vs. or can use an antibiotic.
Same with the mentality lets rope and choke them to treat a respiratory infection or pink eye irritation. Then after half killing the animal let's use LA-200 to treat because it worked in gramps time. There is a time and place for nylon treatment of a bovine around the neck but it's not with a respiratory infection. There is a lot of great drugs at our disposal, QUIT GRABBING THE LA-200 TO TREAT other than for foot rot or pink eye. But a person really needs to figure cost, time and speed of treatment picked. Are you going to run animal in chute or use a dart gun will decide what drug to use.
Cheapest thing a person can do in animal agriculture is have a good working relationship with a vet to have scripts on hand. Have them confidant they don't have a problem writing you a script to have the drugs on hand. The day to stop a wreck is the minute you see an animal afflicted. Don't wait a few days to see if they get better. It's like gramps or grandma telling you I'm too sick to go to the doctor.
