Subject: It Takes 3 Things To Get Pink Eye In Cattle

NEMO
Reading the thread below reminds me of my vet and his college study on pink eye in cattle.

1. You have to have sunlight
2. You have to have eye irritation.
3. You have to have the pink eye strain present.

Eliminate one of the 3 and you won't have pink eye.

Sunlight:
That's why eye patches help to cure it because you are removing the sunlight.
The vet said they would run cattle in the chute and irritate the eye and introduce pink eye strains but leave them in a dark room or with eye patches on and those cattle wouldn't get pink eye.

Eye Irritation:
Mowing pastures or eliminating material from irritating the eyes while cattle are grazing helps prevent it.
Vet said they would run cattle in the chute, introduce the pink eye strain (but not irritate the eye) and kick them out into the sunlight and they wouldn't get pink eye.

Pink Eye Strain:
If the pink eye strain (forgive me I should of looked up the technical term for it before I started typing) isn't present then the cattle won't get pink eye.
Vet said they would run cattle into the chute and irritate the eyes but not introduce the pink eye strain and kick them out into sunlight and they wouldn't get pink eye.

The vets motivation for this study in college was because he knew how big of an issue pink eye was for his father's vet clients. So his conclusion from his in depth study was by eliminating one of the 3 elements you won't get pink eye. He will swear by the 3 things needed to have pink eye in cattle to this day.

Makes me wonder on all the responses of squirting different products into the eye helping to cure pink eye:

Are those products killing the pink eye strain?

OR

Is it causing the cattle to keep their eye shut long enough thus eliminating the sun light?
