| The way the weather comes in my part of California, the only feed we have is last springs grass. Getting to were it could start to rain. The first 1/2 inch of rain takes a lot of the good out of it. Wild oats, ryegrass, fox tail, and poor quality brome is all just straw, or gut filler then. An clover or vetch is still very good. With a protein boast from some brands of tubes cows will keep condition much better. The only alternative we have is feeding hay. We are experimenting this year with liquid tubes with the lick wheels. Depending on when the grass grows we may feed hay anyway. But need to clean up last years grass first. And since we are finishing calving the cows need a boast anyway.
I am willing to try any brand of tubes, but always go back to PBM out of east Texas. Just not big enough to buy by the truck load. Feed stores here don't like dealing with the PBM company. But several larger operations generally willing sell some. Some brands they eat like candy, others they don't eat at all. Some are just not the right mix of minerals for what is needed. I don't think it would anywhere close to 30% less. But it gets more out of what I have. And other than salt blocks the only mineral I feed. | |
