Since t-boss won't sell a calf that way, clearly that settles it...

For a young guy, small herd, whatever the situation buying a good prospect calf. Not a cheap auction calf, but a good prospect calf. There ain't nothing wrong with that to develop them into your own bull.
Somebody has seen that calf hit the ground and on day one been like this one's in the running. And that same person can point to the mom and say look at how she's turned out all these years. If that bull and cow had calves prior to this one, how'd they turn out. There's a lot of information just with the calf hitting the ground on the first day.

600- 800 lb whatever the weaning weight is, you buy them at feeder price. You got 4 to 5 months to get him to a year old. Put the shape finish on him that you want. If he passes the performance test, you got a beautiful bull. If not, you band him, You finish him and you get your money back.
We've done it with a buddy this way. He knows the herd that we have. Walked it a couple times throughout the summer while the calves were growing. He had it down to the last couple and then let the DNA of that calf and the dad of the calf make the final decision. Couple breeding seasons behind him and he's still doing good

How many horror stories are there of buying a pretty young bull laying at 5 and $6,000 out there and he gets hurt before a first calf ever gets made or at some time in that first year.

A DNA test isn't a crystal ball. A performance test isn't a crystal ball, but a guy can grab a lot of information to make the best decision he can.

One way isn't automatically the right way And the other way isn't automatically foolish.
