1st crop hay. NH560 with moisture on monitor. Was all around 12-16%. 2nd crop bales are fine with similar moisture reading but a little dryer (according to monitor) Is my core too tight? NO Moisture sensor off? Possibly Obviously it needed to dry down better. Tia.
I think moisture meters as a 'tool' only, not the bible. They maybe close, but remember with your baler where is it sampling? And where is your mold? Next how were the bales stored (stacked? How high? Flat? on end? spaced?, ventilation, etc.). My experience with RB is that 16% is pushing the limit, especially if it's stem moisture, I'm applying crop saver at that level. I know from taking core samples what my actual moisture is over an AVERAGE of multiple bales. I have a Koster for checking my samples (the Gold Standard IMHO) and I send a sample to a lab.
You can test your own hay, with a microwave, a cup of water and a gram scale to find the accuracy of your baler moisture meter, too. Hint: don't use better half's microwave or do the work in the house, if you still want to sleep inside the house at night.
