Eastern NE KS | AP66 is my oldest cow. She was born in S'2013 out of PK66 a 2004 cow. She has 2 daughters in the herd, and 3 bull calves sold to neighbors to become a herd sire. AP66 had a daughter this spring. I hope I have a picture of her. Her adult tag will be PA66 and represents the start of just 3 generations over 22 years.
This is not extremely unusual. Many cow/calf producers have similar individuals/cow families. But it is my example AND several of her progeny were attractive enough to be keep for breeding stock.
This story is the antithesis and hopefully a good alternative to the Transova literature I picked up at the American Royal on Friday. They are advertising their IVF technology to propagate a producers "best" genetics faster and broader with more calves from 8-10 month old heifers at egg collection.
In many ways, AP66 has proven herself and should become an embryo donor. However with no experience, I have no plans for that. While I don't know the economic details, I presume her aged and therefore fairly average EPD profile does little to help the pay off.
AP66 absolutely seeks my cow dog Lexi and will chase the dog. It is a short lived game between them as Lexi will circle around soon AP66 lungs ache and that the end of that if Lexi gives a wide berth.
