That's something I haven't seen before. I can't blame the tiler for doing that if they were hand dug. There may have not been any machinery available at the time to remove the rock.
I tried to save a couple of those pics for an email but they won't show with Windows 7 - the file type is HPTSMSMVP.JPG, something this machine can't display except on a webpage.
