Complaint or Symptom :
Tru-Vee openers on wing row units will not penetrate the soil to the correct depth. Wings float, leaving seeds too shallow or on top of the ground.
Problem or Situation :
In certain hard ground and tough residue conditions, the planter wings may not have enough weight to adequately penetrate and achieve the necessary depth. This problem occurs most often when the rear rockshaft rows are down, because the weight of the frame is spread over additional row units and openers.
Solution :
Before adding additional ballast:
• Make sure the problem is not a wing lift cylinder rephasing issue. Refer to DTAC Solution 62271 for rephasing valve information and diagnosis.
• Make sure the planter wings are not being floated because of excessive row unit down force. Use only enough down force to achieve the proper penetration and depth control.
If the wing penetration problem is not related to lift cylinder rephasing or too much row unit down force, there are three options for adding additional weight to the planter wings:
1. A weight bracket kit has been developed for 1790 planters that utilizes tractor suitcase weights to add additional ballast to the planter wings.
Up to 1000 lbs. of additional weight can be added to each planter wing for 1790 16/31 and 16/32 planters. Up to 800 lbs. of additional weight can be added to each planter wing for 1790 12/23 and 12/24 planters.
Order one service parts kit AA67061 per planter. The AA67061 kit will fit 1790 12/23, 12/24, 16/31, and 16/32 planters and contains all the parts required for both wings.
The kit uses R127764 suitcase weights only. Add up to 8 weights per side on 30 foot frames and up to 10 per side on 40 foot frames. Other suitcase weight designs may cause interference when the planter is folded and are not approved for use with this weight bracket kit. Suitcase weights are not included.
NOTE: AA67061 kit is not compatible with tongue-mounted tanks on 12/23 and 12/24 Row planters due to folding clearance.
2. Liquid Insecticide Tanks can be installed on 1790 16/31, 16/32, and 24 Row 20 wing frames and filled with water to add additional ballast. Order one BA92783 attachment bundle per planter. Wing-mounted liquid insecticide tanks are not available for 1790 12/23 and 12/24 planters.
3. If the planter was ordered less markers, marker weight brackets and tractor suitcase weights can be added to replace the weight of the markers. Refer to DTAC Solution 66637 for the correct parts to order.
