Middlesex County, Ontario | It's usually best to do what you can mechanically to make the code and sensor requirements simple and robust. Certainly you can do something with horizontal ultrasonic distance sensors that track a cow's movements but that's not simply or robust.
I assume that the cows can pass through from either direction?
Probably best to have 3 sensors, all pointing down, the outside 2 just over a cow's length apart and the third sensor in the middle.
If the sensor in the middle sees a cow and the outside two don't see a cow then you know the middle sensor is over the cow's back and you can spray.
The car bumper reverse sensor style of ultrasonic sensor are readily available and somewhat weatherproof.
