I've dabbled with ultra sonic sensors.
The ones I got did not have much range
maybe a foot or so.
Is the chute open on top?
If you have two or more you can tell the direction
and position.
Quick scan of Ebay has Banner sensors reasonable
price / distance / waterproof.
