They were outside quite often so they were used to the sun and were tanned early in the year so they didnt burn. They probably also wore a wide trimmed hat and long sleeve shirts to avoid direct overhead sunlight.
+1, my grandfather wore long sleeve shirt all summer, whitest arms you ever see. Straw hat in summer, cap in winter, un-tanned forehead too.
