I agree with you. Especially with the spineless, bought-and-paid-for NCBA comment.
Just thinking out loud…what would happen if there was some sort of CRP type program. Prairie grasses, no alfalfa. The gov. subsidized the seeding, paid a below average rent, but then allowed the landowner to take 2 cuttings of gras hay off/year. I think it would help the grain prices by taking fridge acres off, and it would help with herd rebuilding.
I’ve been told such a program exists, but I haven’t been able to find it anywhere.
There are already CRP programs that allow the farmer to “buy out” a portion of the CRP each year for haying and grazing. It’s the pollinator mixes that “forbid” haying and grazing - even during emergency haying and grazing proclamations.
most of these prairie grasses mixes (at least in southern iowa) have forage quality BELOW corn stalks when the primary nesting period is done….. |
