They were outside quite often so they were used to the sun and were tanned early in the year so they didnt burn. They probably also wore a wide trimmed hat and long sleeve shirts to avoid direct overhead sunlight. Ironically, people who are rarely in the sun have more cases of melanoma than those who work in the sun.
