Latimer Iowa | I have had a number of people communicate they want to come check out the mill so I am confirming that we will do a walk through on Sunday the 23rd at 1pm at the mill site at 360 E 14th street Albert Lea MN. Will meet by the east entrance, parking on the street is best. Families are welcome, you are responsible for watching your kids though. It is safe, but also a construction site so some common sense is needed, and the roof is the best view. If you come you are assuming your own liability. There is walking involved and no working elevator so wear comfortable shoes, mill is 7 stories high with a nice interior stairway. If you dont like stairs there is plenty to see at the ground level too. Walking through takes about 1.5 hours depending on how long winded I get... We are not looking for oats, or more growers, this is just for fun for anyone that likes seeing construction, agriculture processing, and is a little crazy like we are.
I am also going to meet with a few guys at 10 am at my bin site on the same day. The fields around there were oats and are double crop soybeans. My seeder is there, some harvesting equipment, grain dryer and bins, and cover crop blending and mixing facility. There is also a cover crop trial, and depending on time and desire we can look at the fields that will be grazed this year. Bin site address is 1560 Heather Ave Latimer IA 50452.
Both facilities are close to Interstate 35 about 1 hour apart.
Goal is to just have fun and learn, nothing for sale and we are not buying anything either. There is not enough time to get too in depth during the tour but we will likely hang out after for a bit as well.
Pics of double crop beans: First 3 pics are soybeans planted July 10th after oat harvest. They look good. It has been rainy here and finally got the sprayed with liberty and roundup about 4 days ago.
Second 2 pics are double crop beans planted 11 days later. They look like crap. We are the only ones around here, besides other mill growers, attempting double crop beans after oats. Mine have been averaging 22-26. This year will be a large trial with about 2000 acres planted. I would estimate the first planted ones at 30-35 bpa and the last planted at 10-15 bpa. The last planted were also after a much taller oat variety so there was much more residue. All no-tilled on 7.5's at 150,000.
Oats did well this year, overall average over 2000 acres was 148 bpa and 39 lbs test weight. Field averages from 178 bpa to 112 bpa. I dried every bushels this year to get them off sooner for double crops and weather risk.
Then a few mill pics.
