Some of the best cow/calf country there is in the southern 2-3 county tier in Iowa and the northern 2-3 county tier in MO got destroyed by $7 corn...and it was quick. Ponds got shoved in, fences tore out, all brush and trees cleared and new tile and terraces were added. That former cow ground is lost forever. Not many young folks want to fool with cows out on a Sunday, keeping baby calves alive, or endless baling and feeding hay when they can push an autosteer button and/or cheat crop insurance out of a profit. Many salebarns in my stated area have closed, more will. It doesn't much matter how much the market says to increase production. Deer hunters have maybe grabbed as much ground as $7 corn, they are relentless and a gigantic pain in the ass | |
