Eastern NE KS
I think the most important issue is that they can increase combustion efficiency by placing a constant load on the engine. The achieve that with a generator and battery pack to store excess energy until needed for acceleration, climbing a hill, etc.

The Volt allowed a user to charge it battery from the grid and had a electric only range of 53 miles. Towards the end of the range, the internal combustion engine would start generating electric power for the battery, the battery continues to power the electric motors that propel the vehicle.

The 106 mpg is misleading if the math fails to recognize the initial base charge of the batteries. I fail to catch if they applied 'standardized' range modification for that non-gasoline energy. I tend to assume they did their math in a non misleading manner but not sure.

What I'm puzzled about is there are 'plug-in hybrids' on the road today and how is this video's tech different from that?
