West Lafayette IN | After reading the responses to my question about expanding cattle herds, it seems apparent that the American supply of beef is not going to increase very much or possibly not at all.
I completely understand that grain farmers get subsidies, CRP, insurance, ethanol mandates etc. The list goes on an and on. As an “I” state grain producer, I believe my farm would be more profitable without government subsidies and let the market determine price discovery. However, the subsidies aren’t up to me and they probably aren’t going to change.
What will change is the supply of meat in the United States. That supply can come from:
1. American herd expansion
2. Foreign beef imports
3. Beef replaced by chicken and pork. | |
