coast of Maine | About 3 weeks ago I pulled a hose reel up the the shop,as I mentioned before we were going to run it thru the forest/ledges/6 ft culvertX80 ft/then to a field to hook another reel to.I wanted it light as possible so we decided to blow out the water with shop air.The reel is about 4 inch ID 1250 ft long hose.I too a aluminum cam lock plug and put a tubeless valve stem in it.Hooked the sucker up and as usual it takes along time to gurgle the water out the other end by inlet.Shop air is +- 150 psi.I leave ,tech in shop unhooks air after a hour or two as water stopped ejecting.I came back and was surprised to still hear gurgling in the reel.I and a tech decide we should take out the cam lock plug.It was crotch height and no cart.got a couple pry bars as plug was tight and cam ears too stiff.I shuffled a foot away as I thought maybe water would come out. Then the noise of 10 cannons ,small flume of water 50 ft,and the plug blew 50 ft into the shop and pierced a plastic tool case, just missing two mechanics inside the shop.If that had hit me,I am sure broken thigh bone or become nad less.My engineering son said with the air alone and the sq inch of plug 2000 lbs of pressure.I was shaking thinking of it for a day.So what I cannot understand is why that force cannot spurt the water out the opposite end until nearly empty. My math in circular vertical chambers evades me.Thoughts? | |
