Subject: A "cure" for melanoma?

Possibly good news for people who have soaked up waaay too much vitamin D from the sun over the years.

A personalized mRNA vaccine could help keep melanoma — the deadliest form of skin cancer — from coming back or spreading elsewhere in the body, early data from a clinical trial suggests.

Scientists at Merck and Moderna tested a combination of the vaccine and the immunotherapy drug Keytruda in hundreds of melanoma patients who had had their tumors surgically removed. Patients given both treatments were less likely to have the cancer return or spread than those who received Keytruda alone, the pharmaceutical companies announced Wednesday. The trial's full data haven't been released yet, but the researchers said they plan to share the results with regulators, suggesting they hope to get U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the vaccine.

Today's announcement is also bigger than skin cancer. The vaccine behind the trial results isn't actually specific to melanoma — it's custom-made for each individual's tumor. In theory, that means the same approach could work for any tumor. So what does this all mean?
