About 1965 - 1967 farmers in your area purchased power tillers to incorporate herbicides. They very quickly found out that intensive tilling of high organic matter, moist, clay soils was a big mistake. After a day or two of bright sunshine the soil would be hard as a rock.
Growing up, I was taught:
Plant in the mud, the crop will be a dud!
Plant in the dust and the bins will bust!
If we plant wet, the only hope we have is that it stays wet all summer. |
