A lot of it comes down to the employees. Eight years ago, I was helping a friend rig his trailer with an electric tailgate. Went to an old-school NAPA store and asked for a single pole, double throw, normal open switch. A couple of the old hands looked at me like I was from outer space. A high school aged girl was also working behind the counter and overheard my request. She told me, she had run across a switch like that, while thumbing through a catalog. She didn't have one in stock, but could order one. That's the person I would hire if I was looking for a stock-clerk.

Understand, I do the same things here, and my parts guys do try to help folks...but they also aren't parts guys for everything, they deal in what we deal in, so a single pole, double throw switch would throw them for a loop too

I only know of 1 old school hardware store within 100 miles here, one of those places where you tell them what you need and they say "hang on" and either come back with what you need, or come back with something you should be able to make work. Again, I try and do those things, but I've been doing it for 27 years now....my parts guys pick some things up from when I do old school stuff, but at the same time, it's not smart business to spend time trying to find everyone, everything, every time. If it doesn't fit our equipment, and you're not the only guy at the counter, I'm not spending 25 minutes to find you a $12 part for you to say "I can buy that on amazon for $9"

There's a balance we try to find between helping all we can, and helping those that support us by finding them anything they might ask us.
Chris
